Gangtok, Sikkim: The Most Beautiful City in India, Snow Leopards and Legendary Momos

After 11 exhausting days on a motorbike, we reached the most beautiful city in India — Gangtok in Sikkim — with its Himalayan zoo, monasteries, waterfalls, incredible Tibetan food, and a snoring man we will never forget.

After Majuli Island, we took 2 nights in Guwahati to rest a bit. 11 days riding a motorbike in North East India was more tiring than expected. Then, we experimented a night train to reach Sikkim. To get good seats, it was as difficult as the French bureaucracy… Anyway, we could sleep a bit despite the most extraordinary snoring person we ever met… You can't choose your neighbors in the train…

We arrived in New Jalpaiguri Junction early morning and found a Sumo (the shared jeep, you remember?) to go to Gangtok.

Arriving in Gangtok

It was a long drive and the road is in a really bad shape but the views are very beautiful. We arrived early afternoon and desperately found a place to sleep (peak season of India tourist).

We did so many things in Gangtok… We managed to get our permit for trekking, found a guide (mandatory there…), made a few friends who hosted us for the next 2 nights and discovered really good Tibetan meals (including amazing Momos!!!).

Exploring by Motorbike

We also dedicated to rent another motorbike and to visit the surroundings during a full day. It's mainly mountain roads, everything we love! To be honest, Gangtok is the most beautiful city we visited in India. There are so many things to see around such as waterfalls, monasteries, the Himalaya animals Zoo, etc.

The Himalayan Zoological Park

The Himalayan Zoological Park was a highlight. Snow leopards, red pandas, bears, rare pheasants — it has an impressive collection of Himalayan wildlife.
