Majuli: Arriving by Tiny Wooden Ferry on the World's Largest River Island

May 17, 20183 min readby William & Augustina

Following our app blindly into the middle of nowhere, we found a sand footpath, a tiny wooden boat, and eventually — the world's largest river island, slowly sinking into the Brahmaputra.

Guys, sorry for such late update of our adventures. We were stuck on the mountains 😉!

So, after these days in Ziro Valley, we were much less tired. We were thinking to go further in Arunachal Pradesh (for Mechukha with 2 more days riding) but we started to be very sick of the bumpy roads. So, we decided to exit Arunachal Pradesh and head to Majuli Island. It's called the biggest river island in the world and is famous for unique arts and living culture. During the rainy season, an extremely big part of the island gets flooded. Unfortunately, these floods also destroy the island and it becomes smaller every year…

The Journey: App Says "Turn Here"

But about everything from the beginning. We achieved to exit Ziro valley within 2 hours and found a very beautiful and brand-new road (called the shortcut one) to cross the Pahumara city. We followed our preferred app (Maps.me) to reach the river side by thinking a ferry should be there anyway. We found a sand footpath…

We continued this road until we reached a very small house and a little boat in the middle of nowhere with 2 persons. But no worry, we were at the right place. It was our first tiny wood ferry and the guys had a flat place to put motorbikes on it. We were not really feeling safe but surprisingly, it was really stable!

Finding Our Way to Majuli

It's like this we understood we were not yet exactly on the Majuli island. It was a bit difficult to find the way to the next village but local people helped us. We took another "ferry" to reach Majuli. It was clearly a better boat and faster crossing. After 15 minutes of ride, we found a homestay where we spent 2 nights.

Culture and Silence

We visited some places such as a temple and mask making. But in general, we mostly enjoyed the silence and birds songs over there!
