India Begins: Tripura, Meghalaya, and the Living Root Bridges of Nongriat

May 2, 20185 min readby William & Augustina

Our first footprints in India — a bad-planning adventure across three states, waterfalls tall enough to have creepy stories, and a jungle village reached by 3,000 stairs.

After those few days in Bangladesh, we successfully crossed the border with India. Crossing a border over the land is always something super tricky…

We arrived in Agartala, India, our first footprints in India! The view changed radically. We did almost nothing except to breathe and relax. But we realized how stupid we were to cross this specific border instead of the one in the North (after Sylhet)… You know why? Because all the places we were excited about in India was directly after this another border! So… it took us 2 days to reach Cherrapunji.

Getting There: Trains, Buses, and a Sumo

We tried an Indian train for 9 hours (to Silchar), a bus of 7 hours (to Shillong) on a really bad road (with one landslide which caused a big traffic jam) and a Sumo (shared jeep!) of 2 hours (to Cherrapunji). A bad planning got us a lot of adventures, isn't? :-)

Well, we did a few renovations before leaving France but we cannot think of doing the same thing ;-) Agartala, India

Cherrapunji: One of the Wettest Places on Earth

After Shillong, the landscapes changed a lot. We started to see very green mountains and a lot of reliefs. It was so revivifying for us :-) All the area in Cherrapunji and its surrounding are majestic. We could relax and enjoy the waterfall (and the tallest of India which has a creepy story btw…). And it is one of the wettest places on Earth, so we had quite a few showers over there!

Nongriat: Down 3,000 Stairs into the Jungle

Then, we moved to Nongriat! Nongriat is a small village in the middle of the jungle. All the nature there is really beautiful even if the area is mostly famous for its roots bridges. So, after 30 minutes of car from Cherrapunjee and around 1 hour of going down (they say 3,000 stairs), you can reach the village. We really enjoyed this place. We even did a small trek to see the "Rainbow Waterfall". No rainbow but very huge and powerful waterfall! Check the pics done by the drone… :-)
