Moorea: Polynesian Hospitality at Its Best

January 5, 20184 min readby William & Augustina

Two minutes of hitchhiking, a spontaneous party invitation, local food like Fafaru, and stunning views — Moorea stole our hearts in just two nights.

If you think Tahiti is paradise, go to Moorea! Every island we visit is more and more beautiful. It's sad that we stayed only two nights there (the flight schedules were not on our side...).

Hitchhiking and Instant Friendship

When we exited the airport (which looks more like a big barn), it took us exactly two minutes to stop a passing car — hitchhiking is super easy in Polynesia. But what happened next was incredible: the family who picked us up invited us to join a party at their home and never let us go. We spent a night celebrating in Polynesian style, and these people really know how to celebrate!

You can't find more hospitable people. We tried local food such as Fafaru (fermented fish) and Po'e (fermented banana). How lucky are they (and us) — rays and sharks pass every day just a few feet from their terrace.

We visited one of only two factories on Moorea, where they create oil for body and hair from coconuts and Monoï flowers.

Camping by the Beach

The next day we found a nice camping near the beach and calmly enjoyed fruits, swimming, and an amazing view. Unfortunately, tropical storms caught up with us and the night in the tent was quite harsh. But everything is great!

Now we've spent a very different night in Bora Bora. A short update coming soon!
